How the China trip cost calculator works

The calculator starts with a usable seven-day Beijing and Shanghai estimate. It then adjusts accommodation, food and local transport for your selected cities, travel season, group size and hotel-room sharing. Route-specific trains, attractions, connectivity and optional full-trip costs are added separately. Results show both a recommended total and a wider planning range instead of pretending one exact number will fit every date.

What Costs Are Included?

The calculator covers the main day-to-day expenses first-time visitors to China typically encounter:

  • Accommodation — from hostel dorms (~¥80/night) to upscale hotels (~¥1,100/night)
  • Food — street food (~¥15–25/meal), sit-down restaurants, hotpot, or app delivery
  • City transport — metro (~¥3–7/ride) and DiDi taxi (~¥20–50/ride)
  • Intercity high-speed trains — route-level planning prices for Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Guangzhou
  • Attractions — Forbidden City (¥60), Great Wall (¥65+), Chengdu Panda Base (¥58), Shanghai Tower (¥180)
  • Connectivity — travel eSIM and VPN one-off costs (~¥150 combined)
  • Optional complete-trip costs — international flights, visa fees, insurance, other intercity travel, and a planning buffer

International flights, visa fees, insurance and other transport remain zero until you enter them because they depend on your origin and personal circumstances. Hotel prices are calculated by room and night; most other categories are calculated per traveler.

Average China Travel Costs by Travel Style

Budget Tips for First-Time Visitors

  • Eat where locals eat — street food and small noodle shops are cheap, delicious, and safe if the food is cooked hot.
  • Use the metro in big cities. It is fast, cheap, and has English signage in all major cities.
  • Book high-speed trains early — tickets open 15 days before departure and popular routes sell out.
  • Carry a small cash reserve (¥200–500 RMB) even if you plan to use Alipay for everything.
  • Before you estimate your budget, check your entry status — use the China entry policy checker on the home page.

FAQ: China Travel Budget

How much does a trip to China cost in 2026?
A 7-day mid-range trip to China typically costs ¥5,000–7,000 per person (roughly $735–1,030 USD at the July 2026 reference rate), excluding international flights. A backpacker doing the same trip might spend ¥2,500–4,000. Use the calculator above for a personalised estimate.
Is China expensive for tourists?
China is generally affordable by international standards, particularly for food, public transport, and domestic travel. Accommodation in major cities can be mid-range or higher, but budget options are widely available. It is significantly cheaper than Japan, Australia, or Western Europe for a comparable trip.
How much cash should I bring to China?
Most payments in China are handled by phone (Alipay or WeChat Pay), but carrying ¥200–500 RMB as a backup is sensible. Merchants in China are legally required to accept cash, so it is always a reliable fallback if your phone dies or a payment fails.
Can foreigners use Alipay or WeChat Pay in China?
Yes. Both apps allow foreign visitors to link an international Visa or Mastercard. No Chinese bank account is needed. Set up Alipay before you fly — see the payments guide for step-by-step instructions.
What is a realistic daily budget for China?
For a mid-range first-time visitor staying in budget hotels, eating at local restaurants, and using public transport, a realistic daily budget is ¥650–900 (roughly $96–132 USD at the July 2026 reference rate) per person, not counting intercity trains or major attractions. Use the calculator above to build a more precise figure based on your plans.
Does the calculator include flights, visas and insurance?
Yes, but these fields start at zero because the correct amount depends on your departure city, passport and booking dates. Enter each cost in your selected display currency and the calculator will include it in the group total and shareable link.
