China trip cost for Americans: 7, 10 and 14 day budgets

For Americans, the China trip budget has two layers: what you spend inside China, and what you must handle before departure, including flights, visa planning, payments, eSIM, and VPN setup.

Inside China

A realistic mid-range budget is usually $90-125 per person per day, excluding international flights and visa fees.

Before you book

US passport holders should check visa requirements and transit options before paying for flights.

Is China cheap for Americans?

Once you are inside China, daily spending can feel affordable compared with US city travel. Metro rides, local meals, and domestic rail are good value. The big costs are international flights, hotel choice, premium restaurants, and mistakes caused by arriving without payment or internet setup.

Best value route for a first US-China trip

For most first-timers, Beijing plus Shanghai is the simplest route. If you have 10 days, add Xi'an for history and lower daily costs. If food is a priority, Chengdu can reduce average daily spending while adding a very different city experience.
