About China for Newcomers
An independent travel planning site for people visiting China for the first time — built around two free tools and a library of practical guides.
What this site is
China for Newcomers is an independent beginner-friendly travel planning site created to help first-time visitors understand China's entry rules, travel costs, apps, transport, and practical day-to-day basics.
The site is built around two core tools:
- China Trip Budget Calculator — estimate your travel costs based on real 2026 prices for hotels, food, transport, attractions, and intercity trains, in your own currency.
- China Entry Policy Checker — check whether your passport qualifies for visa-free entry or transit, and see exactly what documents you need to prepare.
Alongside the tools, the site maintains a library of practical guides covering payments, apps, transport, safety, trains, cultural basics, and etiquette — all written for people encountering China for the first time.
Our editorial approach
Every piece of information on this site is sourced from official Chinese government sources — primarily the National Immigration Administration (nia.gov.cn), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (mfa.gov.cn), and the People's Bank of China (pbc.gov.cn). Policy data is verified before publication and reviewed on a monthly basis.
Budget figures are based on multiple independent 2026 traveller cost sources, cross-referenced and averaged into realistic ranges. We don't use affiliate incentives to inflate cost estimates.
Disclaimer
Budget estimates are approximate and based on typical 2026 traveller spending. Actual costs vary by city, season, individual choices, and exchange rate fluctuations. International flights and visa fees are not included in budget calculations.
